Loyalty used to mean something in basketball. People picked a team and stuck with that team through wins, losses, rebuilds, and whatever else came their way. Nowadays, it seems like every season people are repping a different team. The rise of bandwagoning has completely changed what it means to be a fan.
Now what would I say are the biggest reasons for the uprising in bandwagoning?
1. Social Media
- Everyone has some sort of social media on their phone. Whether it’s Snapchat, LinkedIn, or Reddit, it’s hard to find someone today who doesn’t use at least one platform. Social media has made it easy to follow what’s trending, and that is part of what has hurt the game of basketball. The constant stream of content focused only on "powerhouse" teams has especially hurt the NBA and WNBA.
- Everyone nowadays is obsessed with being a “winner.” Everyone wants to be the best at everything, and this mentality has changed what it means to be a basketball fan. People no longer want to watch struggling teams, they only want to watch winners.
- Instant gratification has ruined people’s attention spans. No one cares to watch a team develop a player from the 20th pick in the draft into a franchise star. But once that player becomes a superstar, suddenly everyone claims they were a fan from the start.
