The Problem with Bandwagoning in Basketball

Loyalty used to mean something in basketball. People picked a team and stuck with that team through wins, losses, rebuilds, and whatever else came their way. Nowadays, it seems like every season people are repping a different team. The rise of bandwagoning has completely changed what it means to be a fan.
Now what would I say are the biggest reasons for the uprising in bandwagoning?
1. Social Media

  • Everyone has some sort of social media on their phone. Whether it’s Snapchat, LinkedIn, or Reddit, it’s hard to find someone today who doesn’t use at least one platform. Social media has made it easy to follow what’s trending, and that is part of what has hurt the game of basketball. The constant stream of content focused only on "powerhouse" teams has especially hurt the NBA and WNBA.
2. Championship Culture
  • Everyone nowadays is obsessed with being a “winner.” Everyone wants to be the best at everything, and this mentality has changed what it means to be a basketball fan. People no longer want to watch struggling teams, they only want to watch winners.
3. Short Attention Span
  • Instant gratification has ruined people’s attention spans. No one cares to watch a team develop a player from the 20th pick in the draft into a franchise star. But once that player becomes a superstar, suddenly everyone claims they were a fan from the start.
Bandwagoning might be a popular part of today's game, but it takes away from what makes sports, especially basketball, special. The real magic of the game is watching your team grow, struggle, and fight to reach the top. Maybe modern basketball fans just are not able to understand that, and that is fine, but do not call yourself a true fan of the game of basketball.

Whether you like watching from the comfort of your home, catching the action live at the arena, or enjoying the atmosphere with other fans, people can experience the game however they enjoy it most. But what’s the best way to enjoy the game of basketball? Lets break it down  1. At the Arena  Pros:  The atmosphere  In a stadium, you can feel every dunk, cheer, and buzzer-beater in real time.  Stadium food is its own experience! Grabbing a bite at a game is part of the basketball experience. Even if your team’s not doing great, you can spend your time at the concession stand! Cons:  Expensive!  Going to a game is probably the most expensive way to enjoy basketball, especially the higher up you go in the professional ranks. An NBA or WNBA game can easily break the bank.
