Netflix's The Last Dance: A Basketball Documentary Worth Watching?

When Netflix released The Last Dance, a 10 part documentary about Michael Jordan and the 1990s Chicago Bulls, it became more than just a sports series but an overall cultural moment. Curious to relive the glory days of the Bull's dynasty or simply to enjoy one of Netflix's most talked about docuseries, basketball fans and non basketball fans alike tuned in. But does the documentary actually live up to the hype? Here is my personal take, with a breakdown of what works, what doesn't, and who should watch.

The Positives:

The story telling in this series is by far the its biggest strength. Each episode is able to integrate game highlights with behind the scenes footage, candid interviews, and never before seen moments. The documentary does a well job balancing Jordan's legendary career with side stories from teammates like Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman, giving the audience a sense of the team's personality that shaped the Bulls. For fans of pop culture, the series also highlights how the Bulls have influenced music, fashion, and entertainment in the 1990s, something that is still relevant to this day!

The Negatives:

When it came to player's perspective during this peak era, the series tended to center most of it on Jordan's voice, leaving less room for other players that had also contributed to the dynasty of the Bulls. On top of this, the editing style, which jumps back and forth across timelines, can come off confusing to casual viewers unfamiliar with NBA history. And while the docuseries hints at the lifestyle, such as Rodman's fashion, celebrity appearances, and stadium culture, the food and cultural perspective could have been explored more deeply.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Despite it's flaws, as everything has its flaws, The Last Dance is a must watch documentary! It is a gripping and emotional watch that shines light on how basketball extends far beyond the court into culture, fashion, and fandom. Whether you're a life long fan or just love a binge worthy Netflix series, this documentary will keep you hooked.

The Last Dance proves that basketball isn't just about scores, it's about influence, identity, and inspiration. It's a reminder on how sports, food, and pop culture connect to create shared experiences that stay long with us after the final buzzer.

But what’s the best way to enjoy the game of basketball? Lets break it down  1. At the Arena  Pros:  The atmosphere  In a stadium, you can feel every dunk, cheer, and buzzer-beater in real time.  Stadium food is its own experience! Grabbing a bite at a game is part of the basketball experience. Even if your team’s not doing great, you can spend your time at the concession stand! Cons:  Expensive!  Going to a game is probably the most expensive way to enjoy basketball, especially the higher up you go in the professional ranks. An NBA or WNBA game can easily break the bank.
